چکیده

This paper describes an unmanaged 193Os-era pine-hardwood stand on ;I minor stream terrace in Ashley County, AR. Probably inventoried as a part of an early growth and yield study, the sample plot was approximately 3.2 ha in si,e and contained at least 21 tree species. Loblolly pine comprised 39.1 o/c of all stems, followed by willow oak (12.7(h), winged elm (9.6’S), sweetgum (7.8%), water oak (6.7%), white oak (h.2%), red oak (4.9%), and hickory (4.6%). Pine, sweetgum, and oak dominated the midcanopy and overstory, with few late successional species. Stand basal krrea averaged 32 m’/ha, with 409 live trees/ha. The dominance of shade intolerant species, the lack of very big trees, and a scarcity of snags sug{rested that this stand was second-growth and likely arose from a disturbance c in the mid-19”’ Century. Because this forest was sampled in the 1930s, its composition and structure should better reflect mature presettlement pinehardwoods on minor stream terrace sites than modern examples.

Composition, Biomass, and Overstory Spatial Patterns in a Mature Pine-Hardwood Stand in Southeastern Arkansas

A 1.21-ha plot was established in a mature pine–hardwood forest (Hyatt’s Woods) along a low stream terrace in southeastern Arkansas. Compositionally, this stand had considerable arboreal richness, with 26 different tree species ‡9 cm in diameter. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) contributed 42% of the stand’s 37.1 m/ha of basal area; the remaining fraction included baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) a...

This study describes the composition and structure of a mature, secondgrowth Pinus taeda (Loblolly Pine) and Pinus echinata (Shortleaf Pine)-dominated old-fi eld stand. Now owned by the University of Arkansas, this 22.5-ha parcel just outside of the city of Monticello, AR, has been protected as a de facto natural area since the 1950s. Stand conditions immediately following a restoration harvest in an old-growth pine- hardwood remnant

Portions of the Levi Wilcoxon Demonstration Forest (LWDF), a privately owned parcel of oldgrowth pine and hardwoods in Ashley County, Arkansas, were recently treated to restore conditions similar to some historic accounts of the virgin forest. Following a hardwood-only cut, a post-harvest inventory showed that the number of tree species in the sample area declined from 24 in 2006 (the most rece...

Roost Characteristics of Hoary Bats in Arkansas

—We radiotracked nine hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus) and characterized 12 roosts during late spring and early summer in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Hoary bats generally roosted on the easterly sides of tree canopies in the foliage of white oaks (Quercus alba), post oaks (Q. stellata) and shortleaf pines (Pinus echinata). Roost heights averaged 16.5 6 2.2 m and all roost trees we...

Lessons from 72 years of monitoring a once-cut pine-hardwood stand on the Crossett Experimental Forest, Arkansas, U.S.A

The Crossett Experimental Forest was established in 1934 to provide landowners in the UpperWest Gulf Coastal Plain with reliable, science-based advice on how to manage their loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (Pinus echinata) pine-dominated forests. A key component of this program was the establishment of an unmanaged control, currently known as the Russell R. Reynolds Research Natural Area (...
